There are 39.4 million people worldwide infected with HIV.
25.4 million people are in sub-Sahara Africa. Fifty-seven
percent (57%)of all infections are in African women.
Seventy-six percent (76%) are in young females aged 15 to
24 years.(UNAIDS, 2004) In the United States fifty percent
(50%) of all new HIV infected are black females. Research is
showing that these women have probably been infected while
in faithful monogamous relationships., HIV is the number one
killer of black males aged 15 to 44.(CDC,2004). To make
matters worst only 1 out 10 infected individuals in Africa have
access to antiretroviral therapy that would help them live
longer.(UNAIDS,2004) Why are such atrocities allowed to
exist? Who is going to be an advocate for those who
cannot speak out for themselves? Africans are dying at a
rate of 2.3 million a year as a result of this
pandemic.(UNAIDS,2004) These deaths can be minimized if
the manpower and medication to fight this pandemic is
available.
